Centre Approves Appointment of 24 New Judges to Allahabad High Court

In a major boost to the judiciary, the Central Government on Friday approved the appointment of 24 new judges to the Allahabad High Court, including nine advocates and fifteen judicial officers elevated from the subordinate judiciary.

With these appointments, the working strength of the Allahabad High Court — the largest High Court in the country — will rise from 86 to 110 judges. The court has a sanctioned strength of 160, which means that even after the new appointments, 50 positions will still remain vacant.

Newly Appointed Judges

Among the advocates who have been elevated to the bench are:
Vivek Saran, Vivek Kumar Singh, Garima Prashad, Sudhanshu Chauhan, Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary, Swarupama Chaturvedi, Siddharth Nandan, Kunal Ravi Singh, Indrajeet Shukla, and Satya Veer Singh.

The judicial officers promoted to the bench include:
Dr. Ajay Kumar-I, Chawan Prakash, Divesh Chandra Samant, Prashant Mishra-I, Tarun Saxena, Rajeev Bharti, Padam Narain Mishra, Lakshmi Kant Shukla, Jai Prakash Tiwari, Devendra Singh-I, Sanjiv Kumar, Vani Ranjan Agrawal, Achal Sachdev, and Babita Rani.

A Step Toward Reducing Backlog

The appointments come following the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium, which had recently urged the government to expedite the process to strengthen the judiciary.

Given that the Allahabad High Court handles one of the highest caseloads in the country, this move is expected to bring much-needed relief and improve the pace of case disposal.

Legal experts have welcomed the development, calling it a “positive step toward easing the burden on the judiciary”, though they also emphasized the need for continued appointments to fill the remaining vacancies and ensure timely justice.
