Justice Manmohan Elevated to Supreme Court: A Landmark Moment in Indian Judiciary
In a significant development for India’s judiciary, Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The minister's post read:
"In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India."
A Journey of Excellence
Justice Manmohan’s elevation follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on November 28, 2024. Led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, the Collegium—comprising Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and Abhay S. Oka—unanimously backed his promotion.
Born on December 17, 1962, Justice Manmohan has had a distinguished career spanning decades. After earning his LL.B. from Delhi University's Campus Law Centre in 1987, he was admitted to the Bar Council of Delhi the same year. His legal practice flourished at the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, where he became known for his sharp legal mind and unwavering commitment to justice.
In January 2003, he was recognized for his expertise and designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court. His judicial career began in March 2008, when he was appointed an additional judge of the Delhi High Court, becoming a permanent judge in December 2009.
Justice Manmohan’s leadership skills came to the fore when he served as Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in September 2023, eventually taking over as Chief Justice in September 2024.
Joining the Apex Court
With his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Manmohan will be the 33rd judge, leaving the court just one position shy of its full strength of 34 judges. Known for his clarity in judgments and profound understanding of constitutional law, his presence is expected to further enrich the nation’s highest judicial forum.
This elevation is not just a personal milestone but also a testament to Justice Manmohan’s lifelong dedication to upholding justice and the rule of law. As he takes his oath, all eyes will be on how his expertise contributes to shaping the future of Indian jurisprudence.
