Twenty-one former justices of the Supreme Court and High Court have sent a letter to Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud expressing anxiety about the mounting pressures on the judiciary that might compromise its objectivity and integrity. The letter emphasizes how critical it is to shield the judiciary from forces that might erode public confidence and sway court rulings.
These former judges claim that certain groups are creating narratives that undermine the judiciary's impartiality and reputation because they are motivated by political and personal gain. The letter goes into great detail on how these kinds of actions undermine the integrity of the legal system and call into question the objectivity of judges. It is stated that the defendants are involved in unsettling activities, such as fabricating tales to sway judicial outcomes to their favor.
The former judges also noted that cases with tremendous social, economic, and political significance are especially vulnerable to these pressures. In their appeal, they urged the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Chandrachud, to do away with these pressures and guarantee the independence and integrity of the legal system.
